Abstract Due to the low spectral resolution of QuikBird images, it is difficult to discriminate land use classes such as roads and buildings, forest and permanent crops (e.g. orchards, olive groves, vineyards), tilled field and untilled fields, when only radiometry is considered and no multi-temporal information is available. In this study, spatial information such as texture and context is used together with spectral information to improve classification. Spatial feature selection is class oriented and a hierarchical classification scheme is applied. A pan-sharpened QuickBird image of Salento area (Southern Italy), acquired in January, has been analysed.
