Abstract

The idea of using a Geographical Information System to catalogue geosites that are located along the line of "Limitone dei Greci" has been carried out in a way that the characteristics of the geosites can be soon underlined . GIS finality is to trace a course that shows the geomorphologic, hydrographic, archaeological and landscape characteristics of territory. With the name "Limitone dei Greci" we mean a separation zone between two different geologic compositions that were crossed in Plio-pleistocene Age by a part of coast, which is remarked nowadays by a roads net from the city of Oria to the cross of the public road Mesagne - San Pancrazio Salentino. The two geologic compositions are on two different height levels so they are parted by a scarp which was created by the erosion of Plio-pleistocene sea. From the city of Oria moving to East there is a series of descending hills that are made of the sand of some ancient coast dune that stand on clay and sand deposits of the Pliocenic sea. There are ancient stream inlets, the canal of Pezza dell'Abate and the canal of Crepacore, in which rain waters flow, sources phenomenon, fossil outcrops. For the presence of many territorial resources, this area presents settlements from the Palaeolithic to Prehistoric and protohistoric, but above all in Roman and Medieval Age the roads course that connected Oria with Otranto developed. Finally, in this GIS proper electronic tabs will be arranged and converted in special formats to be dynamically linked to artifacts and to the vector themes that are analysis objects. These tabs, beyond their natural, landscape and morphologic characteristics, offer important technical data and results to imagine first and consequently to program an ordered and efficient recovering plan for these geosites.
