Nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria are potentially useful both industrially and agricurturally as sources of reduced nitrogen, as well as for biomass production for chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In the present study the productivity of the marine cyanobacterium Nodularia sp., cultivated both in open ponds and closed photobioreactors are reported. Results have shown that the biomass yield attained in photobioreactors was 11.6 g/m2/day and 8.8 g/m2/day in open ponds. this diffrence can be explained with a better temperature profile realized in the photobioreactor.

Abstract

Nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria are potentially useful both industrially and agricurturally as sources of reduced nitrogen, as well as for biomass production for chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In the present study the productivity of the marine cyanobacterium Nodularia sp., cultivated both in open ponds and closed photobioreactors are reported. Results have shown that the biomass yield attained in photobioreactors was 11.6 g/m2/day and 8.8 g/m2/day in open ponds. this diffrence can be explained with a better temperature profile realized in the photobioreactor.
