In this paper a Multidisciplinary Design Optimization framework for ship analysis and design is developed and demonstrated in a real life problem. Two disciplines are consid- ered, namely the drag of the ship and its motion in waves, and three objective functions are defined and minimised. The analysis is carried out via numerical solvers. The problem is solved as a nonlinear multiobjective optimization. Instead of converting it into a single objective problem by scalarization, the Pareto optimal set is build and analyzed. Meta- modelling techniques are applied to reduce the computational effort. An experimental campaign carried out to check the final model confirmed the success of the optimization process.

Multidisciplinary Design Optimization of a Naval Frigate

2004
