We have coated silica microspheres obtained by melting the tip of a standard silica-hafnia optical fiber with a 70% SiO2 - 30 % HfO2 thin film doped with 0.3 mol % of Er3+. Using a tapered fiber - microsphere coupling setup we have observed lasing in the whispering gallery modes (WGM) of the microspheres.
