This paper reports the characterization of the different components of the gamma background in epithermal neutron scattering experiments at pulsed neutron sources. The measurements were performed on the VESUVIO spectrometer at ISIS spallation neutron source. These measurements, carried out with a high purity germanium detector, aim to provide detailed information for the investigation of the effect of the 7 energy discrimination on the signal-to-background ratio. It is shown that the 7 background is produced by different sources that can be identified with their relative time structure and relative weight. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
