Abstract

In this work we present high resolution biostratigraphical investigations of late Quaternary sedimentary sequence from core GAN 86-17 collected in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. We analyzed the planktonic foraminiferal assemblages and oxygen isotopic compositions performed on their shells in order to characterize the oceanographic conditions in the eastern Mediterranean Sea at time of sapropel depositions. Microfaunal changes and oxygen isotope record suggest several phases during the deposition of sapropels related to change in food availability and /or thermic stratifications.
