Abstract

The growing interest in new advanced ceramics used as structural materials in metallurgical plants calls for adequate corrosion testing methods. As no standard way of performing such corrosion tests exists, we describe a test that is suitable for quality control and research and development applications; in fact, it provides a method for evaluating the corrosion resistance of ceramics in the presence of molten metals. The goal is to provide a means of studying the chemistry and mechanism of corrosion in order to ascertain if a particular ceramic can be used in contact with a liquid metal, and to determine the effects of varying compositions, production parameters, and surface treatments on developing a corrosion resistant ceramic.
