In this paper some possible approaches to MDO in ship design are presented. A simple test case of optimization within an hydroelastic framework is tackled. Depending on the problem formulation, different optimal solutions may be obtained, and also the computational cost and the performance of an optimization algorithm may change. Here different formulations and algorithms will be tested, in order to identify a suitable trade-off between accuracy and CPU time, for selected algorithms.
