Distributed Computing generally refers to applications that can be naturally decomposed in several tasks (or activities) that may execute concurrently and exchange data. In this paper we present two different distributed applications: the Parallel Environment for Cellular Automata Network System (PECANS) and the Fishamerket Multiagent Negotiation Environment (FMNE). We used PVM in both PECANS and FMNE implementations and we show in this paper some implementation choices we made to cope with the different communication issues raising from the two applications, stressing up the differences between them.

Abstract

Distributed Computing generally refers to applications that can be naturally decomposed in several tasks (or activities) that may execute concurrently and exchange data. In this paper we present two different distributed applications: the Parallel Environment for Cellular Automata Network System (PECANS) and the Fishamerket Multiagent Negotiation Environment (FMNE). We used PVM in both PECANS and FMNE implementations and we show in this paper some implementation choices we made to cope with the different communication issues raising from the two applications, stressing up the differences between them.
