The CeLIII edge is used to investigate the valence state of Cerium in 25.5 wt% CeO2-2.5 Y2O3-/2 ZrO2 plasma sprayed coatings. The Cerium changes its valence state either during as after the sparying process, as a function of the spraying technologies and deposition parameters, while Y2O3 and ZrO2 are mostly unchanged. The present study confirms in the bulk the XPS study on Cerium valence state in surface, excpet in a relevant case.
