Corrosion protection performance of organic coatings applied on car parts is often assessed by means of conventional methods (e.g. salt fog chamber test). However, there is a strong interest in the development of new, reliable, and short-time quality tests. The aim of this work was to extend the use of electrochemical measurement techniques -already widely employed in scientific research- to actual industrial applications. Based on this assumption, the protective power of three different organic coatings, applied on steel components used in the car manufacturing industry, was assessed by means of electrode impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The resulting data were expressed in an easy to interpret way, thus allowing for their easy employment by any user. This work has clearly proved EIS efficacy in dealing with these issues, and, at the same time, has proved it to be a sensitive, quick to apply method yielding easily understandable experimental data.
