Latin Philosophical Dictionaries in the Early Modern Era, in "A Short-Title List of Subject Dictionaries"

This contribution retraces some of the most important moments in the philosophical lexicography of the modern period between the Renaissance and the eighteenth century. Among other things, the article dwells on how the practice of connecting philosophical lexicography and terminology within the perspective of the history of ideas often results in losing sight of the differences between the two and of the peculiarities in the history of both fields. Giorgio Tonelli has rightly pointed out how the relation between dictionaries and doctrinal tendencies contemporary to them should constitute a fundamental field of research for the history of ideas, while contributing towards a more adequate use of this kind of sources.

Il contributo ricostruisce alcuni momenti significativi della lessicografia filosofica nell'età moderna, tra Rinascimento e Settecento. Nell'articolo si osserva tra l'altro come sia proprio l'abitudine di collegare terminologia e lessicografia filosofica in una prospettiva di storia delle idee a far sì che non di rado si perdano di vista le differenze e non si considerino adeguatamente le peculiarità della storia dell'una e dell'altra. Giorgio Tonelli ha giustamente sottolineato come la relazione tra dizionari e tendenze dottrinali contemporanee a essi dovrebbe essere un basilare campo di ricerca della storia delle idee, come pure costituire un contributo a un uso più adeguato di questo tipo di fonti.
