Spatio-temporal variations of both proteolytic and respiratory activities, microbial processes involved in the degradation of the organic matter, were studied in two different areas of the Northern Adriatic Sea (A area, located in front of the Po delta, and B area, near Ancona) within the CNR-MURST Prisma 2 project «Biogeochemical cycles». Enzymatic activity levels showed mostly a coast-offshore gradient and appear to be strongly affected by salinity values throughout the studied period, rising in the presence of diluted waters, whereas temperature affects positively the activities only in warm periods. The study showed the presence of high variability between the two areas and, within each area, along the water column, between upper and bottom layers. Interannual variations occurred also during the sampling periods. The observed changes in the microbial activities are not always related to bacterial density.

Abstract
The observed changes in the microbial activities are not always related to bacterial density.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
