The ligand behaviour of the esters of dithiocarbazic acid NHRNHC(=S)SR? in intensely coloured complexes containing the doubly deprotonated ligands [Pt{NRNC(S)SR?}2] (R = H, R? = CH2Ph; R = CH2Ph, R? = Me or CH2Ph; R = Pri, R? = Me; R = hexyl, R? = Me or CH2Ph) has been investigated by electronic, i.r., and 1H n.m.r. spectroscopy and electrochemistry. The crystal and molecular structure of [Pt{N(CH2Ph)NC(S)SMe}2] has also been determined. All the complexes have a square-planar trans-PtN2S2 chromophore; they are dithiolene-like and show electron-transfer properties.
