A heavy duty turbocharged DI Diesel engine was converted to CNG stoichiometric operation, and a commercial three-way catalyst, (TWC) was adopted to control exhaust emissions. The inlet charge was diluted by means of EGR in order to reduce knocking tendency and exhaust temperatures. A fast-burn combustion chamber allowed a 20% EGR rate to be tolerated by the engine without a significant increase of cyclic variation. Engine performance was similar to that of the base Diesel engine, while thermal efficiency slightly decreased. Exhaust emissions, measured according to ECE-R49 procedure, were much lower than the European emission standards in force from October 1995 (EURO II).
