L'enjeu épistémologique de la notion d'époque entre organisme et système au XIXe siècle

La fonction heuristique de la notion d'époque n'a pas été affaiblie par la méfiance pour ses implications ontologique, propre de la théorie de l'histoire du XX siècle. Une analyse historique de cette notion s'avère à même d'éclairer son rôle dans la recherche d'une méthode pour comprendre l'altérité des temps passés depuis l'émergence d'une nouvelle perception de leur discontinuité et unicité. Dans la culture allemande en particulier, la représentation des époques comme des entiers intrinsèquement cohérents relève, du XVIII au XIX siècle, d'une dialectique entre deux champs métaphoriques dominantes, le « système » et l' « organisme », à l'entrecroisement entre philologie, histoire et sciences de la vie. Lorsque l'approche nominaliste de J.G. Droysen affaiblira l'ontologie de l'époque, ça ne sera qu'au profit de la primauté du procès comme cadre de référence unifiant pour la compréhension historique.

The heuristic function of the notion of epoch seems to have survived the distrust for its ontological implications, proper of the epistemic stance of historical research in XX Century. An historical approach to this notion brings into light its role in the search for an epistemic framework for understanding the otherness of times past, since the emergence of a new perception of their discontinuity and uniqueness. Especially in the German tradition the featuring of epochs as intrinsically coherent wholes appears implicated, from XVIII to XIX Century, in a dialectic between two major metaphoric fields, "system" and "organism", revealing a positive interplay among philology, history and life sciences in the establishing of the notion. J.G. Droysen seminal nominalistic approach to the notion of epoch will entail a shift to the prominence of process as a unifying framework for historical understanding.
