In this work the formation of a 3D photonic crystal (PC) is described, where the normal opal is formed by close packing of silica spheres. We investigated the optical properties of the packed monodisperse silica submicron spheres by means of optical reflection measurements. The results are compatible with a three-dimensional face centered cubic order in the solid structures
