The distribution and functional diversity of the microbial community were investigated in the Straits of Messina. Total and autotrophic picoplankton and the levels of activity of some enzymes (leucine aminopeptidase, beta-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase) showed a marked diversification of this ecosystem related to the presence of water masses with different hydrological characteristics.
