The crystallization kinetics of binary blends of samples of poly(ethylene oxide) with different molecular weights, namely 2000, 20 000, and 197000 has been investigated by means of polarized light microscopy in order to establish the dependence of the kinetic parameters upon the composition. The temperature and composition dependence of the growth rates of spherulites in thin films of supercooled melt has been analyzed by means of the theoretical expressions given by Hoffman and Lauritzen. The experimental results indicate that some kinetic and thermodynamic quantities such as the rate of crystallization, the equilibrium melting temperature, the free energy of formation of a nucleus of critical size, and the surface free energy of folding are strongly dependent upon the composition of the blends.
