An overview of principles, interfaces and applications is provided with membrane contactor prospects. Basic concepts, material membranes along with manufacturing procedures and key membrane contactor operations are described, giving emphasis to advantages and shortcomings. The potential areas of applications for some advanced membrane contactors such as membrane emulsification, membrane distillation, osmotic membrane distillation and membrane crystallization are also discussed.
