Abstract

n European monitoring network is running to assess the effects on forests of factor acting on a wide spatial scale, such as air pollution and climate change. The results of the Italian network allowed to highlight some peculiarity, such as: A. high nitrogen deposition, related to regional emissions and to the effect of the Alps; B. a temporal lag between the reduction in nitrogen emission and the improvemnent in deposition quality; C. high near-ground ozone levels, not related to tree damage; D. Saharan dust buffering deposition acidity; E. a relationship between nitrogen deposition and forest health, still to be confirmed.
