The integration of GIS with a management model is used to assess the carrying capacity of animal waste land disposal in a study area (Val di Chiana, Italy). Landscape units, which represent areas distinguished by homogeneous land-use patterns and geomorphological characteristics, have been located in the area. Data from the model simulations have been generalized to these units by means of the GIS. The results indicate that land disposal of manure under the current conditions is not a completely environmentally sustainable choice. In order to solve some critical local situations, the need for a co-operative approach among municipalities is suggested. The integration a GIS-model with the concept of landscape units proved to be a promising approach for sustainable land-use planning.

Abstract
The integration of GIS with a management model is used to assess the carrying capacity of animal waste land disposal in a study area (Val di Chiana, Italy). Landscape units, which represent areas distinguished by homogeneous land-use patterns and geomorphological characteristics, have been located in the area. Data from the model simulations have been generalized to these units by means of the GIS. The results indicate that land disposal of manure under the current conditions is not a completely environmentally sustainable choice. In order to solve some critical local situations, the need for a co-operative approach among municipalities is suggested. The integration a GIS-model with the concept of landscape units proved to be a promising approach for sustainable land-use planning.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
