Abstract

Polymers have repeat units composed of the monomers used to produce them. They also possess a Molar Mass Distribution (MMD) and end groups that cap the repeat units. Complete polymer characterizion will be achieved when all the above quantities are measured. Routine methods for synthetic polymer characterizion exist and all textbooks in polymer science devote a long chapter to them. There is a definite possibility that, in a near future , MS will be added to routine methods. This implies that probably we will have to modify textbooks and also encyclopedic works. Operators in the field of synthetic polymers need to be updated on advances in characterizion. No wonder, therefore, that this one is not the first review concerning MS of synthetic polymers. It is mandatory to give here some brief comments on past surveys. sez01 Introduction,,,,,3 sez02 Electrospray Ionization,,,,,,,,4 sez03 ESI and polymers with a broad molar mass distribution ,,,,,6 sez04 Nano electrospray ionisation ,,,,,,,,,,6 sez05 Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization ,,,,,6 sez06 Desorption electrospray ionisation ,,,,7 sez07 Ion mobility Separation ,,,,7 sez08 MALDI ,,,, 8 sez09 MALDI matrices,,,10 sez10 MALDI sample preparation ,,, 11 sez11 Comparing MALDI spectra and Size Exclusion Chromatograms,,,12 sez12 MALDI and polymers with a broad molar mass distribution,,,,13 sez13 The off-line combination of MALDI and SEC,,,,,,14 sez14 Optimization of the SEC-MALDI method,,,,17 sez15 MALDI and other chromatographic techniques,,,,18 sez16 MALDI and copolymers,,,,,19 sez17 Tandem Mass Spectrometry,,,,,20
