As part of a collaborative research programme between IITA and the Plant Germplasm Institute (CNR), bari, Italy, 21 Vigna unguiculata accessiosns showing resistance or susceptibility to bruchid pests were evaluated for protein, S-amino acid and, for both raw and cooked seeds, trypsin inhibitor (TI) contents. The data revealed that (1) the S-amino acids ranged from 0.190 to 0.84%, (2) protein content ranged from 20.8 to 26.4 % and was not related to resistance, and (3) TI content values (expressed as TI untis/mg protein) ranged from 27 to 66 for raw seeds and were not related to resistance, as hitherto supposed.
