In order to investigate the variability in the tomato ecotype San Marzano, ninetysix populations coming from different microclimates of the typical cultivation area were studied. Yield (mean weight and number of fruits at the first fertile node, equatorial and polar diameters) and quality (colour, pH, solid content, sugar and acid contents) traits were analyzed, which showed a large variability inter-and intra-microclimates. No population had optimal values for all the analyzed traits. The causes of variation are discussed as well as the ideotype of the tomato "San Marzano".

Abstract
In order to investigate the variability in the tomato ecotype San Marzano, ninetysix populations coming from different microclimates of the typical cultivation area were studied. Yield (mean weight and number of fruits at the first fertile node, equatorial and polar diameters) and quality (colour, pH, solid content, sugar and acid contents) traits were analyzed, which showed a large variability inter-and intra-microclimates. No population had optimal values for all the analyzed traits. The causes of variation are discussed as well as the ideotype of the tomato "San Marzano".File in questo prodotto:
