A sample of tetraploid and (hypo)-hexaploid hybrid clones between dihaploid Solanum tuberosum (2n=2x=24) and the diploid wild species S. commersonii (2n=2x=24) were scored for many epigeous and hypogeous traits. Some hybrids had better productive traits than both parents. Hybrids also showed heterotic vigour for plant growth, which generally resembled the cultivated phenotype. In general, tetraploid hybrids were more vigorous than hexaploid ones, and showed better flowering. Some variation was observed among hexaploids. Variability for 12 epigeous traits could be summarized by 5-6 canonical variables, which were correlated primarily to reproductive traits (colour and shape of flower, degree of flowering), and, secondarily, to vegetative traits (degree of pubescence, number and size of leaflets). Four significant canonical variables, which were correlated to the length of stolons and the number and weight of tubers, were obtained by the discriminant analysis with 4 hypogeous traits.
