Abstract

A detailed description of the flow around a fast displacement ship is given in terms of mean velocity components to provide a useful benchmark for CFD validation. The measurements have been performed at the INSEAN basin n. 2 that is 220 m long, 9 in wide and 3.5 in deep. A specially designed five holes Pitot probe for side hull measurements has been adopted to reach all the regions of the flow field. The tests have been carried out at Froude number 0.28 corresponding to a model length of 5.72 in and carriage speed of 2.097 m/s. Measurements of the three mean velocity components have been performed on 10 cross-sections along the model. Furthermore, the regions that presented trace of particular flow structures have been analysed in detail. In those cases, the measurements have been repeated, adopting finer grids. A detailed uncertainty assessment is given for the propeller plane section by evaluation of bias and precision limit. Cross validation of the experimental results for the nominal wake obtained at INSEAN, David Taylor Model Basin (DTMB) and Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research (IIHR) has been carried out, to certify the quality of the database. Present results have been adopted as official benchmark for CFD validation at the "G2K workshop" on numerical hydrodynamics.
