5-azacytidine, a nucleotide analogue, was found earlier to inhibit head regeneration but to augment bud formation in Hydra attenuata. The present report shows that such inhibition of head regeneration also persists in buds derived from 5-azaCR-treated parents, even though the progeny were never exposed directly to the analogue. However, the increased bud induction capacity observed earlier in the parent is lacking in the progeny. Since different bud induction capacities are encountered in the 5-azaCR- treated parents and the buds derived from these parents, respectively, but the head inhibition property is the same in both these groups, we conclude that in Hydra there is no strict relation between head regeneration and bud formation.
