Life expectancy has considerable increased in the recent years and a new concept of chronological and functional age has been introduced. Recently hematological analysers provide new indices related to erythrocyte and platelet counts (RDW, HDW, MPV, PDW, Pct). In the elderly hematological assay is currently used for screening health status and for investigating underlying diseases. The aim of the study is to investigate the values of this new hematological indices in healthy subjects. We investigate these values in 60 healthy elderly (E) and 66 young-adults (YA) as a control group (cut-off: 65 years), using Technicon Bayer-H.1 system to analyse the erythrogram values. Comparing by sex and age the common and the new hematological parameters, statistica differences only in male's group were found (p YA vs E: RBC <.01; MCV <.01; MCH <.01; Plate et count <.05; MPV <.05; PDW <.01). It must be underline that the new index confidence intervals reported in the study show very holder limits than Bayer range both in E and YA. Our results may contribute to define the limits in healthy elderly. Further diagnostic studies were suitable to evaluate a higher number of subjects and to investigate if a cut-off is reliable to identify underlying disease of old people.
