Abstract

A frequently used hydraulic component supplying power to hydraulic circuits in mobile applications is an extcrnal gear pump. Previous analysis showed how, in this low-(()st compunent. a design based on commun, ense assumptions on the inncr pressure distribution can lead to satisfactory repreocl1tation of ils internal stress ,jistribution 1 I]. A further step in the analysis could be the dfect of the machining procedure on the final shape .Irthe pump casing. To this purpose, the rcsulls .\hown in 12] are used on the casing "-s l1]()oifkd loy a different machining procedure, to check for the presence of stress tleld distortion due to the new shape. Apart from the resull, of the analysiS. not relevant to the purpose of the paper, attention has been focuoc,d here in order to (heck and compare different approaches used by two high-end commercial software tools. ANSYS 5.0 and IDEAS VI.i, Various aspecL<;. from the model generation to the analysis resull, represent.1lion. through the !lex; hilily of automatic free meshing algorithms, have heen considered.
