Four commercial Si3N4 powders have been characterized and correlations are presented between: powder characteristics, cold compaction behaviour, densification hot pressing and sintering without application of pressure) behaviour, and microstructural parameters of sintered materials. Wide differences in the sinterability of Si3N4 powders appear to be related to particle size, particle size distribution, degree of agglomeration, and chemical impurities. Sinterability is characterized by a parameter linked to densification rate and grain growth, and this stresses the merit of powders prepared by the chemical route. Diffusion is thought to be the limiting step for densification through hot pressing, which is in line with the liquid-phase sintering model.

Abstract
Four commercial Si3N4 powders have been characterized and correlations are presented between: powder characteristics, cold compaction behaviour, densification hot pressing and sintering without application of pressure) behaviour, and microstructural parameters of sintered materials. Wide differences in the sinterability of Si3N4 powders appear to be related to particle size, particle size distribution, degree of agglomeration, and chemical impurities. Sinterability is characterized by a parameter linked to densification rate and grain growth, and this stresses the merit of powders prepared by the chemical route. Diffusion is thought to be the limiting step for densification through hot pressing, which is in line with the liquid-phase sintering model.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
