Visual communications constitute a very challenging area of signal processing. This paper reviews the main characteristics of a video communication link, within the Integrated Broadband Communication Network, and then examines signal processing requirements and relative constraints on architectures of processors. Relationships between algorithms and processing architectures are derived. Finally, the paper outlines an example of a possible evolutionary approach currently under investigation.
