One of the extensions of the connections between culture and development is represented by the Cultural District, i.e., the set of the relationships which interact on limited areas, where the efforts to increase the value of the cultural heritage, of the production and of the infrastructures integrate each other, creating a process of inclusion of the social value in the economic development. The District can be constituted by the cultural heritage, intended in their wider meaning, by the enterprises interested in different manners at preserving and increasing the value of the cultural heritage, by the required infrastructures, and by the entertainment and free time buildings; potentially, each of these activities could represent the inducement for the others. To build a so complex ensemble of decisions it is necessary to convey a series of multiple actions, starting from the individuation of suitable areas, characterized by a common cultural identity, where to build a network for the sustainable development of the territory, and continuing with the activation of development politics attentive to the promotion of the cultural heritage and to the construction of an apparatus of consensus. Nowadays, the Italian law considers the concept of cultural heritage mainly in constraining and mono-sectorial terms, and thus it does not promote an active integration of the huge italian heritage directed to a sustainable development of the whole context in which it is inserted. Starting from this premise, the aim of this work is that of investigating the cultural district concept focusing on the innovation aspects, on the sustainable value, on the main categories and on realized examples of particular interest. Moreover, this work presents a study about a possible application of the cultural district in the framework of the Territorial Integrated Projects (Italian acronym PIT) provided for the Operative Regional Programme (Italian acronym POR) 2000-2006 of the Campania region, in the sector of the Cultural Resources.
