During strong earthquakes, like the 1963 scenario earthquake (Azzaro 1999) the soil behaves as non-linear material. The non-linear soil behaviour has been investigated by Carrubba and Maugeri (1988a, 1998b) and by Maugeri et al. (1988) for the "Piana" di Catania clay. Non-linear soil behavior of the central area of Catania clay has been investigated by Resonant Column tests (RCT) and cyclic loading torsional shear tests (CLTST), performed on undisturbed Shelby samples retrieved from the borehole located in Via Stellata (Pastore and Turello 1999).
