A novel nonlinear perturbation model was successfully applied to the in vivo characterization of breast lesions (cysts and tumors) after detection by multi-wavelength time-resolved optical mammography. The model relies on the method of Padé approximants and consists in a nonlinear approximation of time-resolved transmittance curves in the presence of an inclusion. Tissue constituents (blood volume, blood oxygen saturation, lipids and water content) were estimated for both the bulk and the lesion areas. Cysts were reported to have high water content while tumors showed increased blood content as compared to bulk tissue. © 2003 Optical Society of America.

Optics Express(Optical Society of America,Washington DC)pubblica lavori originali in formato elettronico,garantendone quindi la rapida diffusione nella comunità scientifica internazionale,concernenti i nuovi sviluppi di interesse per tutti i campi delle scienze e tecnologie ottiche.Impact Factor (ISI 2002)della rivista:2.331.Lo studio presentato è stato svolto nell’ambito del progetto europeo “Optimamm”,ora in fase di conclusione,che ha rappresentato la più ampia sperimentazione clinica sulla mammografia ottica risolta nel tempo.Ha coinvolto finora 190 pazienti con lesioni sia maligne che benigne,ottenendo un’efficacia diagnostica superiore all’80% per i tumori maligni.La ricerca è stata inserita nei “Focus” del CNR.Il gruppo di ricerca è stato invitato al Network on Translational Research on Optical Imaging,istituito dal National Institute of Health,USA,che raggruppa i centri di eccellenza USA nel settore.Si ricordano inoltre altre 5 comunicazioni ad invito a congressi internazionali.
