The present paper reports the synthesis and physicochemical characterization of a series of mononuclear and binuclear complexes with compartmental acyclic and macrocyclic Schiff bases obtained by condensation of 2,6-diformyl-4-chlorophenol and polyamines of the type NH2(CH2)2X(CH2)2NH2 (X ? NH, S). These ligands have two similar or dissimilar compartments in close proximity and can link two metal ions in an identical or different coordination mode. The site occupancy, the coordination geometry of various metal ions and the chemical behaviour in solution have been investigated by IR, UV, magnetic and X-ray diffractometric measurements together with electronic microscopy, X-ray fluorescence and high performance liquid chromatog raphy techniques.
