First results of our research indicate that: carrob seed germination dormancy is determined by the very hard seed coat Dormancy may be removed almost enterely by mechanical (piercing the seed coat) or chemical treatments (sulfuric acid) which allow water penetration a first screening carried out on six genotypes revealed a good variability in the response to salt stress These variability may be on the basis of a selection of genotypes adapted to very difficoult areas to be used for productive reforestation Moreover salinity resistant genotypes may permit the possible use of scarse quality waters (municipal or agro industrial wastewaters) in the first phases of plant establishment.
