The article describes the work done, following the seismic events of April 2009 in Abruzzo, to survey damage to cultural assets. In the historic centre of L'Aquila and in the other municipalities damaged by the earthquake, groups of experts from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, from the Fire Department and from many universities and research institutes surveyed the damage, rendered buildings safe and recovered works of art. The principal tools used and procedures adopted to identify the work necessary to make historic buildings safe are also described.
