RAFT polymerization of monomers like styrene, acrylates and methacrylates (MAM) can be controlled very well but they require particular controlling agents which are not suitable for controlling other monomers like vinyl acetate, N-vinyl pirrolidone, N-vinyl carbazole (LAM). The synthesis and use of RAFT agents with "switchable" characteristics is reported. With this kind of universal RAFT agent the synthesis of block copolymer composed by MAM and LAM is now possible.
