In this chapter we present experimental results of a 23 nodes MANET testbed based on a cross-layer architecture. Specifically, our study mainly focuses on routing and middleware performance. Firstly, a proactive (OLSR) and a reactive (AODV) routing protocol are analysed in terms of traffic load, packet loss, and delay. Main results show that the proactive approach does not negatively influence the system performance, and provides to upper-layer protocols a complete network topology information. Then, we experimentally evaluate a new optimized p2p system based on crosslayer interactions with a proactive routing protocol. This solution outperforms legacy p2p systems on MANETs guaranteeing a correct and timely reaction to nodes mobility and network partitioning. © 2007 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Abstract
