The characterization of the electropolymerization of phenols on silver (both in the presence and absence of amines) shows that the process is closely similar to that observed on iron. Raman spectroscopy shows that amines displace phenoxide ions which are adsorbed flat on the substrate. This displacement of phenoxide by amine explains the formation of thick protective films.
