According to the heading, the Pylos tablet An 724 contains a list of "absent rowers". In this paper the text of the tablet is analyzed and an attempt is made to fill the gaps. Then it is suggested that the same formula is used throughout the document. The conclusion is 1) that in most cases the rowers of An 724 were farmers who dependend on land-owners, 2) that they were obliged to serve as rowers in the fleet and 3) that for this reason the land-owners "let them go".
