Interactive computer music proposes a number of considerations about what the audience experiences in relationship of what-is-going-on-on-stage and the overall musical result. While a traditional music instrument is a compact tool and "to play an instrument" has a precise meaning for everybody, the new electro-acoustic instrument is a system consisting of a number of spread out components: sensors and controllers, computer and electronic sound generators, amplifiers and loudspeakers. How to link information between the various parts of this exploded instrument is deeply correlated to new modalities of com-posing and performing in relationship with how the audience perceives and accepts these new paradigm. We here report our point of view and considerations about the role of "mapping" derived from our experi-ence both in developing original controllers and in the realization of in-teractive electro-acoustic performances.

Abstract

Computer Music Modeling and Retrieval, International Symposium, CMMR 2003, Montpellier, France, May 26-27, 2003, Revised Papers. Series: Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 2771. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the International Computer Music Modeling and Retrieval Symposium, CMMR 2003, held in Montpellier, France, in May 2003. The 20 revised full papers were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the area, the papers address a broad variety of topics including information retrieval, programming, human-computer interaction, digital libraries, hypermedia, artificial intelligence, acoustics, signal processing, etc. The book comes with a CD-ROM presenting supplementary material for the papers included.
