Scientific activities are nowadays highly multidisciplinary, involve researchers of different institutions, and need innovative working environments. In this context, the Networked Multimedia Information Systems Laboratory (NeMIS) of the CNR Institute of Information Science and Technology (ISTI) has designed and realized an approach for the creation and management of Virtual Research Environments based on Hybrid Data Infrastructures. Such environments, accessible through a web browser, offer the whole set of resources necessary to fully respond to the needs of a specific application context (data, services and computational resources). These resources are dynamically acquired by means of an infrastructure that is capable of interfacing with existing services and Grid/Cloud infrastructures. This approach has been successfully applied in application contexts ranging from managing of catch statistics to the production of species distribution maps based on probabilistic models taking into account environmental factors.
La ricerca scientifica è oggi caratterizzata da una alta multidisciplinarietà, richiede ambienti innovativi e coinvolge ricercatori appartenenti ad istituzioni diverse. In questo settore il Networked Multimedia Information Systems Laboratory (NeMIS) dell'Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione (ISTI) del CNR, ha realizzato un approccio per la creazione e gestione di ambienti virtuali di supporto alla ricerca basati su infrastrutture di dati ibride. Tali ambienti sono accessibili tramite un web browser e offrono l'intero insieme di risorse necessarie allo specifico contesto applicativo (dati, servizi e risorse computazionali). Le risorse sono acquisite dinamicamente tramite una infrastruttura che è in grado di interfacciarsi con altre infrastrutture (Grid e Cloud) e servizi esistenti. L'approccio è stato applicato con successo in contesti applicativi che variano dalla gestione di dati statistici sul pescato alla produzione di mappe di distribuzione di specie basate su modelli probabilistici che considerano fattori ambientali.
