Plasma performance in reversed field pinch (RFP) devices, as in the tokamak, is strongly affected by neutrals at the edge. So far only a few experiments have been dedicated to an active control of the neutral particle using conventional solutions of axisymmetric magnetic divertors or throat limiters. The alternative ‘vented pump limiter’ concept is more attractive for an RFP experiment due to the edge plasma and confinement properties of this magnetic configuration. In this paper, the application of a vented pump limiter to an RFP is discussed and the prototype module of the vented pump limiter designed for the RFX experiment is presented. Finally, the optimization of this concept for a next step RFP device is presented.

Abstract

The paper is a result of the joint work of scientists operating at Consorzio RFX, which is one of the Italian Research Units part of the European Program on Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion. In Consorzio RFX scientists from CNR, ENEA and Padova University jointly operate. The RFX experiment is the most important Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) experiment in the world; the RFP magnetic configuration is extensively studied in Europe, USA and Japan. The work dicusses for the first time the possibility to apply a ‘vented pump limiter’ for the active control of neutral particles to a RFP experiment and presents the design of a prototype for RFX. The optimization of this concept for next step RFP devices is also presented. The journal where the paper is published is the most important european journal on plasma physics, where the submitted papers are subjected to a careful referee procedure, that guarantees the notoriety and the good quality of the work.
