The basic statistical features of the electrostatic fluctuations in the edge plasma of the RFX reversed Feld pinch fusion device and their relationship with magnetic relaxation events are reported. The analysis of time series of floating potential measurements obtained at low plasma current (< 400 kA) has shown a clear relation between low-frequency (f < 5 kHz) electrostatic fluctuations and reversal parameter F fluctuations related to relaxation events. The electrostatic turbulence measurements have been investigated through the wavelet decomposition technique, and intermittent structures have been identified. These structures are found to occur mainly during relaxation events. The probability distribution function of waiting times between intermittent structures shows a power law trend, which is a clear evidence of memory-characterized phenomena.

Abstract

The research product presented for this evaluation has been obtained by researchers operating at Consorzio RFX, which includes also researchers from CNR, ENEA and Padova University, and contribute to the European program on Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion. The RFX experiment, is the most important machine of the Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) type in the world. This magnetic configuration is actively studied in Europe, USA and Japan for its potential as a scheme of low magnetic field reactor and for the interesting scientific properties of the plasma produced in it. This work presents, for the first time in an RFP, the experimental evidence of a close relationship between the edge plasma turbulence and the current-driven MHD activity, responsible for the sustainment of the configuration. Europhysics Letters is an important journal of applied physics. The results found for the first time in RFX have been confirmed by other international laboratories as Extrap-T2R in Stockholm.
