Abstract

The paper describes the technical improvement introduced in the reconstruction of the RFX Transfer Energy, Protection and Switching Systems. The major improvements with respect the former design regarded the substitution of ignitrons with thyristors in fast making switches and the upgrades introduced in the control and measurement systems; the relevant design aspects, the construction and tests performed are presented and discussed. The systems have been installed and successfully tested.

The paper is related to the upgrades of the RFX experiment, the most important Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) machine in the world. Nowadays, RFP experiments are currently in operation in Europe, US, and Japan; furthermore, the structure of the RFX power supply system is very similar to those of the largest Tokamak presently in operation. The successful realization has been obtained joining the effort of the Laboratory and Industry, and the technological solutions adopted are now shareable among the European Fusion Laboratory, especially as far as the aspects concerning the construction of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER): in particular, the Transfer Energy System has been designed to permit tests on the prototype of the protection switch for the ITER superconducting Toroidal and Poloidal Magnets.
