A two-dimensional non-linear equilibrium code, able to simulate reversed field pinch (RFP) discharges, has been developed. It is based on the two-dimensional, finite element, MHD equilibrium code MAXFEA, which has been properly modified by introducing RFP profiles of the poloidal current density flux function in accordance with the µ&p model. In particular, equation parameters consistent with available data from the RFX machine have been used. A complete mesh of the RFX poloidal field system has been prepared and the whole poloidal electrical circuit has been implemented into the code. The RFP equilibrium code has been successfully validated against some RFX experiments, with and without plasma. Validation tests were performed using as inputs either the active coil currents or the converter voltages. On the basis of the positive results, the model was considered sufficiently reliable to describe RFX with the new load assembly, too.

Abstract

The RFX experiment, is the most important machine of Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) type in the world. This magnetic configuration is actively studed in Europe, USA and Japan for its potential as a scheme of low magnetic field reactor and for interesting scientific properties of the plasma. During the last years, in order to increase the machine performances, the control systems must meet more challenging requirements and more adequate plasma response models are needed for their design. For the new RFX low assembly it was necessary to design an equilibrium active control system by a non-linear equilibrium code, which integrates a plasma model and an electromagnetic model of the machine, including both active and passive conductors. Moreover, the availability of such a code allows to derive linearized plasma response models by perturbation techniques. Nuclear Fusion, published by IAEA, is the most important journal in the field of controlled thermonuclear fusion.
