In recent decades, increasing attention has been paid to the parametric acoustic arrays (PAA). This review aims to retrace the key stages of their development, but also show the current applications. Since their first introduction [1], the use of these sources turns out to be the most diversified. This presentation will briefly review the history of developments leading up to modern-days of parametric arrays. Challenges associated with transducer performance, signal processing, and acoustic measurements will be described. This article serves as a quick tutorial reference to readers, who are interested to further explore and extend this technology, and bring this technology to other application areas. It outlines some of the important theoretical development of the PAA, and gives an overview of different technologies, implementation techniques and applications in both fields of interests: the underwater and the airborne domains. Finally, a summary of some of the seminal works is provided, as an introduction to the recent research work that is published in this same issue of the Italian Journal of Acoustics. Abstract
